Endorsements & Judicial Candidate Forum – Regular June Meeting Cancelled

Endorsements & Judicial Candidate Forum – Regular June Meeting Cancelled

The district has cancelled our general membership meeting in June and replaced it with a Judicial Candidate Forum on Sunday, June 8th at 12:30 in the afternoon.  We created this forum to increase the quantity and the quality of information available to voters about judicial candidates.  By offering an opportunity for voters to meet judicial candidates, people will be able to make more informed decisions during the primary elections.  The tentative meeting location is the Green Lake Public Library: 7364 E. Green Lake Dr. N., Seattle, WA 98115.  The Green Lake Branch has a meeting room that is wheelchair-accessible and has a maximum occupancy of 99 people.  We may move the meeting in the event that we need a bigger space.

We plan on inviting voters from across King County.  At the conclusion of the forum, we will hold our Primary Endorsements meeting.  In addition to the judicial races, Congressman Jim McDermott, Governor Christine Gregoire, Lt. Governor Brad Owen, Auditor Brian Sonntag, Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler, and  are seeking re-election.  Democrats are challenging the current Republican incumbents of Secretary of State, Commissioner of Public Lands, and Attorney General.  In addition, the Mike Murphy is retiring as Treasurer and Democratic State Representative Jim McIntire is seeking his position.  The non-partisan office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, held by Terry Bergeson, is also subject to election.  All candidates seeking our endorsement must fill out a candidate questionnaire.  Endorsement rules will be posted on our website: www. 43rddems.org

Candidate filing statement and four tips for running for national delegate

  • Tip One: Find a person, or people, who will help you during your campaign for national delegate.  You will need extra hands to distribute fliers and to cheer you up when you feel down.  Campaigns are pretty rough!
  • Tip Two: Contact your voting universe: emails, letters, postcards... get your message out.  Keep your message simple and to the point: "I deserve your vote because..."  Remember to include alternates in your contacts since some alternates may be seated that morning.
  • Tip Three: Follow up on your initial contacts: phone calls, in-person conversations.  Find out what your voter cares about and ask how you can help them to further his/her agenda.  Become an ally.  Few will be elected although many will try... those who are elected will be the ones who have made personal connections within the universe of voters.
  • Tip Four: Do not forget your speech - what you decide to say when you get the microphone is very important.  Many people running for national delegate will be good candidates - dedicated to her/his candidate with a history of community involvement.  Many will send postcards and make phone calls.  It will be a hard choice who to vote for and so the speeches may decide the vote.  Make a solid finish.  Highlight what makes you special.
And remember: FILL OUT YOUR CANDIDATE FILING STATEMENT!  Link to a copy here: http://www.wa-democrats.org/pdf/uploaded/2008%20Declaration%20of%20Candidacy%20Form%20-%20District%20Level.pdf  Mail, e-mail, or fax the Declaration of Candidacy form to the Washington State Democrats office. There are no exceptions. You can mail this form to Dwight Pelz, Chair, RE: Declaration of Candidacy, Washington State Democratic Party, PO Box 4027, Seattle, WA, 98194 or e-mail it to doc@wa-democrats.org. You can fax it to (206) 583-0301.

Also, this document may be interesting for you, it is a link to a three-page document explaining the different types of delegates and alternates: http://www.wa-democrats.org/pdf/uploaded/Delegates.pdf

Information for delegates running to the 7th Congressional District Caucus

Congratulations on your election as a delegate representing the 43rd Legislative District Democrats!  The 43rd Legislative District is the most politically active legislative district in the state so it is truly an honor to have been selected by your peers in this process.  As you look forward to the 7th Congressional Caucus on May 17, there is some information that you should know…

First, we want our district to shine on May 17th!  So no matter who your presidential preference is, if you have any questions at all about the process, feel free to email the chair or any of the officers.  Contact information is posted online at: http://www.43rddems.org/Officers.aspx.  The executive board is here to help you!

Second, delegates for all of the presidential preferences have begun to lobby each other for votes.  This is natural.  Only the delegates elected by their legislative districts will have the power to vote for who goes on to the Democratic National Convention.  With so many people interested and so few seats available, your vote is powerful.  Expect to be contacted many times between now and May 17.

  • If you would like to contact your fellow delegates from the 43rd Legislative District, you can get the list from Rob Dolin at 43rddems@wuxx.com

  • If you would like to contact your fellow delegates from across the 7th Congressional District, you can get the list from Javier Valdez at airjav@msn.com

  • If you would like contact information for local people who have been helping to organize for the candidates, two valuable resources are David Kunselman (Clinton) at dkunselman@yahoo.com and Rose Minier (Obama) at teklanika@gmail.com.  You can also contact the presidential campaigns directly: www.hillaryclinton.com and www.barackobama.com

Third, we are hosting a “How to Run for Delegate” panel and training at the Capitol Hill Library (425 Harvard Ave. E. Seattle, WA 98102) on Sunday, April 27th from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.  The purpose of this training is to discuss lobbying strategies that you can use to strengthen your position as a candidate and to provide some tips for effective campaign communications.  This training is open to everyone and will not be targeted towards any presidential preference.  It should be especially helpful for first-time delegate candidates.
